Make yourself stand out

This page is first in the order of pages because of the very strong passion I have for its message!

Most people think of grades, test scores, activities, and GPA when they think of college admissions.  Of course, these are important factors.  I have created this page to suggest some qualities that will make you further stand out as a student.  These are traits that the most successful students possess.  Further, if you look at the list in a broader scope, aren't these the same traits employers look for in a candidate?

These are things that are not taught directly in class, but are just as important as, if not more important than, the direct outcomes of a classroom.

The characteristics below should be reinforced by parents, teachers, friends, and family.  Students who are characterized by these traits WILL stand out.

  • Interpersonal skills
Learn strong eye contact, firm handshakes, and how to reciprocate conversation.
  • Communication skills
Hone your verbal, listening, nonverbal, and written skills.
  • Take responsibility
Act responsibly at home, at school, and in other areas of your life.
  • Have a positive attitude
It makes a positive impression on those who you come across.
  • Learn to network
By talking to others about their careers, a student will build his/her networking.
The number of employees where networking helped lead them to a job is very high.
  • Be able to work with people from all walks of life
Learn to work together with others, focusing on each person's unique gifts and talents.

Students:  Take control of your education!  Show your parents that you are responsible in all aspects of your life!  Don't expect your parents to trust you if you don't act responsibly.  Look at yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself if I demonstrate these qualities.

Parents:  Support your sons and daughters, but let them do most of the work.  This is how they learn.  If you do everything for them, how will they learn?  Look at yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself, am I providing my son or daughter with the right balance of guidance and opportunities to build growing responsibility?
